About This Blog

Hi, I'm Rikky Patria—a game developer driven by a passion for crafting memorable stories and unique experiences through games. This blog is my space to share my journey as I learn, experiment, and grow in the ever-evolving world of game development.

A Late Start, but a Deep Passion

I started this blog midway through the development of my most recent game, but my journey into game development began much earlier. Since 2016, I’ve been on a self-taught path, learning from online tutorials and experimenting with 3D modeling and animation. For a long time, game development felt like a distant dream. Without clear guidance or resources, it seemed almost unattainable—until platforms like YouTube unlocked a new world of possibilities for creators like me.

The Road So Far

The journey hasn’t been easy. Game development is a vast, complex field, and I quickly realized that making a game involves far more than just creativity—it’s a blend of technical skill, design, and relentless problem-solving.

  • 2018: I released my first game, an augmented reality (AR) app where players could take pictures with Japanese superheroes using ARCore. While I was proud of the result, it was a tough introduction to the challenges of publishing and monetizing games.
  • 2019: My second project was an arcade-inspired turn-based fighting game influenced by "Ultraman Fusion Fight." It was a step up, teaching me valuable lessons about design and gameplay mechanics.
  • 2021-2023: I worked on variations of this concept, steadily improving my skills with each release. Each game brought me closer to realizing my ultimate goal: building my dream game.

Building the Dream

In 2024, I began work on my most ambitious project yet—a beat ‘em up game that combines my love for storytelling with engaging gameplay mechanics. This time, I’m not just focused on making a great game. I’m also thinking about player experience and monetization strategies from the very beginning, aiming to balance creativity with sustainability.

Why This Blog Exists

This blog serves two purposes:

  1. A Personal Journal: To document my journey, obstacles, progress, and reflections. Writing helps me learn from my mistakes and stay grounded in my goals.
  2. A Portfolio: To showcase my work, skills, and growth to potential collaborators or employers in the game development industry.

I hope that by sharing my experiences, I can inspire others who are on their own game development journeys. Whether you're an aspiring developer, a seasoned pro, or just curious about the process, I aim to provide something valuable—be it insights, lessons, or even just the reassurance that you’re not alone in facing the challenges of this craft.

The Joys and Challenges of Game Development

Game development is one of the hardest things I’ve ever undertaken. It’s frustrating, overwhelming, and incredibly challenging—but it’s also deeply rewarding. There’s no place I’d rather be than here, working to bring my ideas to life and sharing that journey with you.
